You're In Charge Of Designing The Alliterative Ponoko Pollen Pendant Light

I hope the name Ponoko Pollen Pendant was a deliberate choice and not just some kind of random alliteration accident, because if it's the latter it's sort of like accidentally naming your kid something that's going to get him beat up a lot. Naming aside, this light forces you to be part of the design process because the pollen-shaped base only truly becomes a lamp when you encase it in your "

Ridiculously Big Lamp No. 15 Makes Me Drool

I'm a rabid, raging, drooling, slavering fan of oversize lamps shades, whether they're of the floor, hanging, sconce or table variety. Thus I love Ron Gilad's Lamp No. 15 which is actually only 12" in diameter but seems crazy large compared to its tiny base. Honestly, this bit is lost on me "After observing and subtracting main characteristics of ex lovers, the designer abstracted these

Recycling "Egg" Adds Some Odd Style To Your Kitchen

This giant white, blue and green egg is certainly eye catching, which is probably a plus if you're looking to make a statement about recycling in your kitchen. Your large, modern, funky kitchen that is, at least if you want the Ovetto to fit in to your decor. Luckily one glance will tell you if this will fit your style or not. I happen to like it, but it's not going to fit into my kitchen,

Dexter Dismembered Silverware Looks Great & Horrific at the Same Time

Not just in time for Halloween but close enough to still be talking about dismembered things (it's only 3 days later!) I found this wonderful Dexter flatware created by, ahem, Steve Butcher in homage to the sociopathic serial-killer-hunting Dexter. This silverware has been sawed, slashed, burned and punctured, which "truly reflects the activities of Dexter." Although the silverware has seen some

The Back of 'My Beautiful Backside' Sofa Looks As Good As The Awesome Front

This gorgeous (but, I have to admit not altogether comfortable looking) sofa "draws upon a miniature painting of a Maharani sitting on the floor of her palace, surrounded and supported by multiples of pebble shaped cushions." Which is interesting to me because when I saw it I thought it was inspired by old TVs and radios that you saw in the U.S. in the '60s and '70s. In fact, I also thought the

Noisy Furniture Doesn't Make Any Sound But Looks Fantastic

I don't know why Noisy Furniture is called noisy since it doesn't appear to make any obvious sounds, but the amazing concept certainly deserves a loud shout out for being innovative. It's a modular system where each piece connects to the next via a dual lock. That allows you to put them together almost anyway you like, from "straight and sober" to "wild and unexpected." Personally I'm all for

Origami Chair Folds In A Lot Of Awesomeness

Okay, sure, the Origami Chair from Form Us With Love is inspired by, that's right, origami. But plenty of things have been inspired by origami and not really turned out to be all that inspirational. This isn't one of those cases though, because the Origami does an outstanding job not only looking a bit like origami, but also looking like an amazingly beautiful chair. The premise: "An idea to

Omar Is Possibly The Most Gorgeous Console Table Ever

I'm not too familiar with John Reeves but wow this guy knows how to design a gorgeous console table. According to him the Omar is "reminiscent of an Arabic style, a tribute to the passion and creativity of Middle Eastern culture, while using materials and processes which are Western in technique, production and finish." That turns out to be an amazingly good idea, John. Thanks for coming up with

Amazing Folding Chair Doubles As Wall Art When Not In Use

Dror Benshetrit has created the most amazing folding chair you and I are ever likely to see, called Pick. It's an aluminum body with decorated wooden slats that folds into a completely flat object so it can be hung on the wall as art when you're not using it as a chair. For someone like, oh, say, me who likes to keep spare folding chairs around for larger dinners and other social events, this

Oliver Tilbury's Awesome Coatrack With No Name

There's not a lot information about Oliver Tilbury's furniture on his site, but at least there are pictures of his gorgeous work. My personal favorite is this coat rack, which also serves as an umbrella stand and seems like it might have some bench-like properties as well. The site says you can order this piece -- or any of Oliver's designs -- but doesn't given any pricing.

Bastard Chair Is Made From Leftovers

The Bastard from Whatels has an amazing look that's derived almost entirely from how the chair is produced. It's made from scraps of leather leftover from the production of more traditional furniture, and the shape of each Bastard is dictated by the shape of the leather scraps. The somewhat charming but not entirely comprehensible description on the Whatels site explains: "It finds its routs in

Frame Plate Turns Food Into Art

The Frame Plate is another design object where the name tells you exactly what you're getting. It's a plate that looks like a picture frame, which has the effect of turning your food into art. Since I like both food and art, the Frame Plate gets a thumbs up from me. As far as I can tell it's just a concept right now though.

Topo Table Gives Your Meals A Landscape

The Topo table doesn't look like any other table because it isn't made like any other table. Topos are created using plastic inserts formed over rocks that are dropped into the table. Each one is made to order after you decide how you want it laid out. The coffee table version is $2,300, and you'll need to add $700 for the small version and $1,200 for the large (at least that includes ground

Milk Carton Vase Not Really For Milk, But For Flowers

There's probably not a lot of places in your house the Carton Vase will fit in, but I'm going out on a limb here to say maybe, oh, the kitchen could be a good place. It's super cheap, selling for just $6.95, which may be why CB2 says "We've had amazing demand for this item. It's currently out of stock, but we'll have more ready to ship end of May." Huh. Lotta kitchens out there with flowers in

Bovist is a pillow, stool and ottoman...with a handle

Bovist does a lot of jobs for a relatively simple arrangement of linen filled with polystyrene beads. It can serve as a floor pillow, a stool or an ottoman, and it comes with a unique -- if rather odd -- crocheted handle to help you carry it around in any of its incarnations. With bold patterns and multi-colored fabric it definitely makes a design statement, although the handle seems like a bit

Concrete Bowl Looks Kind of Soft Actually

Yes, the Concrete Bowl is actually made out of concrete. No, it doesn't look like it. That's because it's made with an eggcrate pattern and sort of scrunched up looking. It's billed as "A true conversation piece with room for your personal display!" Not really buying that. But it is pretty cool looking and would probably look good if you have one of those home with an unfinished, exposed material

JJ Chair Blends Simple Design With High Style

The JJ chair by Solv is an elegant looking piece made out of simple ingredients: a wool felt seat balanced on a hoop base. It's a look I happen to be a sucker for, since it's at the same time both unpretentious but sytlishly chic. A little bit Bohemian and a little bit modern, with a sprinkingly of "wow" to finish it off.

Pile of Books Side Table Is For, Well, Books Actually

I came across the Pile of Books side table over at one of my new favorite blogs, Pan-Dan. (Yes, I'll wait while you click over and check it out...good huh? Told you. Okay, back to your regularly scheduled blog...) I love the concept, though sadly it wouldn't fit in with my decor. The best part for me is that it would either a) force me to be neat since there are fixed storage possibilities thus

The Hanging Grass Garden Brings Lawn Art To Life

Lawn Art usually refers to those odd artifacts you stick on, in and around your lawn to dress it up a little. You know, lawn balls, lawn gnomes, etc. But the Hanging Grass Garden actually turns lawn into art by putting a frame around some prairie grass. And honestly it looks pretty good. The frame comes with a "a tray in which you place the high-tech growing medium, made up [of] tiny sponge balls

Chaos chair

Chaos was designed by minimalist Konstantin Grcic, and it shows...or rather it doesn't show because, well, it's minimalist. Its claim to fame is a narrow angled seat paired with a high angled back, giving it a variable depth and a distinctive look. It's not quite the "magical throne which ennobles everyday situations - sitting, waiting, observing - and gives them the aura of something special"

New Floor Lamp From Re-Surface

Re-Surface makes some of my favorite graffiti covered lights in the world. Actually, they make the only graffiti covered lamps I know of, but I still love them. And cruising by their site I see they now have a new floor lamp model. Unfortunately the picture they have of it is pretty tiny, but it seems to be the standing version of their More-Light. It looks like this one is decorated in the

wave. chair.

The Wave Chair achieves its bizarre but bedazzling look by using webbing wrapped around a frame. Simple technique, amazing result. I'm not sure how comfortable it is, but this is a chair I'll probably stare at more often than I'll sit in anyway. It's $2,212 which is not unreasonable as these things go. It only seems to come in red though.
